As a general contractor I'm always carrying a pencil in my pocket. A standard carpenter's pencil is what I normally carry, and they work fairly well for most jobs. When a sharp pencil is needed, such as with finish carpentry, tile work, or making notes the carpenter's pencil has limitations. A typical mechanical pencil has such a fine lead that it breaks too often. These pencils give you a nice, strong lead with the ability to maintain a sharp point when you need it. I recently completed a big tile job while using the skinnier mechanical pencil from this set, and really liked the performance. The larger pencils I've only used a few times and found them to work great too. And there's a good supply of extra leads in black, yellow and red for whatever you might need to mark up. Overall a really handy set of pencils.

I love these inexpensive carpenter pencils as they work well and I don't worry too much about breaking/losing them since they are relatively inexpensive to replace. In my opinion, these work much better than traditional flat carpenter pencils with chonky leads that require a knife to sharpen and never seem to have the point you need so you're constantly whittling on them. The included scribe has a sharp point, but isn't anything special. I didn't get this kit for the scribe, so I'm not bothered by the quality. The extra leads ensure you can keep working for quite some time (assuming you can find them when you need).

I like that i am able to have just one pencil/marker for everything and not have to have so many different types of them in my pocket. One tool and done, on to cutting the item that is marked.

these mechanical carpenter pencils are pretty great. all of them scribe well on paper and both the red and original led are easily eligible on wood though i don't have any dark wood to test with the red or yellow color to mark with. though i do notice that the red and yellow colored led likes to stick inside the barrel and not click out. also sadly there is no holster to keep the tips covered from debris so the barrel tips will get filled with saw dust if used heavily.

Pros - Comes with an assortment of leads that were not cracked upon delivery. - 6 pencils and a scribe with the lead is a great combo deal. - Built-in sharpener is a great detail as well. - I have found this to be a good replacement for most uses of a traditional boxy shaped carpenter pencil, though I still think both types of pencils have their own uses. - The sharp point stays around I find for much longer than other options with the thicker lead. - I was able to write on copper piping without issue. - Smooth & easy click to lengthen the lead.
