Nothing against old school carpenters pencils - after all you can use the wide side is a 1/2 measure and the skinny side is 1/4 so they are useful. I still have handfuls, but my new Hiboom Dunkive Carpenter Pencil is different because it can reach into places that those rectangular pencils cant with its long tip. Its almost 2 inches long and skinny, the lead is thick and sturdy so it isnt going to break, and my marks are clear. The pencil has a built in sharpener but I havent had to use it yet. The refills included are 1/2 yellow and 1/2 graphite. Id like to have some red too, but what theyve provided will last a LONG time. The pencil has a clip for a pocket, and the protective cap also has a clip. I clip the cap into one of the pencil holders on my tool belt, and then use it like a holster for the pencil. The clip keeps the lid on my tool belt, but when Im all done, its easy to remove so I can return my bright green tool to its place on the workbench. The price for this is just fantastic. Ive gotten permanent markers that run out of ink and leave marks I didnt intend to leave, Ive tried grease pencils but every mark is just a blob, certainly not precision. I have those old school carpenter pencils, but I have to use a knife to sharpen those, so compared to my Hiboom, no contest! I have to guard it closely so it doesnt mysteriously wind up on my sons workbench

This marking tool is an excellent All-in-one solution! Pros: 1. Easy to see/fine with bright green color. 2. Excellent build quality makes this feel like a tool as opposed to a fragile pencil 3. Has built-in sharpener so your tips are always going to provide clean markering 4. Protective cap prevents damage when scriber is not in use 5. Tool comes with multiple refills in both black and yellow for effective marking on both light and dark surfaces 6. The carbon writing rods are super thick and durable so they won't snap like a standard led pencil 7. Excellent price Cons: 1. It would be great if it also came with a metal rod for scribing on metal and plastic but that is more of an enhancement than a "problem " Great woodworking tool that I would highly recommend to anyone!

I've whittled thousands of carpenter's pencils in my short 40+ years... but those days may be long gone. Don't get me wrong, I've used those pencils for a multitude of items, i.e. ladder leg levelers, base trim spacers (1/4" on the short side), thrown motivators for unmotivated employees (or kids), and also as an actual marking utensil... but this thing is worth the sacrifice of giving up those little perks. It allows accurate marks at an extended length, fits in to tight spaces, and boy oh boy that little sharpener does wonders, and keeps the lead marks off of my utility knife. Bingo bango bongo, this is a win-win for everyone. Get it, you won't regret it.

Insert lead, push button to extend lead, mark wood. It does just that. Oh, there's a sharpener in the end cap too. On a more serious note, I like these inexpensive marking pencils. They do the job and are cheap enough to loan out and not fret too much if/when it doesn't return. This one includes enough lead (6 standard graphite and 6 yellow) to outlast the pencil (either by misplacing it, or it taking a ride home with a stranger).
