A Good Toy

My nieces play with me with these figures all the time, and they hold up very well against the rigors of rough play. This is a sturdy figure with a nice sculpt and paint scheme, and a very good price. I recommend it as both a gift or a collectable.

Superb Stegosaurian

Gigantspinosaurus was a medium sized Stegosaurian dinosaur from Late Jurassic China. While it shared a similar body plan to most other stegosaurians, Gigantspinosaurus had one distinguishing feature which gives it its name: two massive shoulder spines. These spines were twice the length of the actual shoulder blades of the animal! This dinosaur had been at the top of my wishlist every year since 2018. I was so happy to finally see it revealed last summer as part of this years lineup. It took quite a while for the figure to release, but Im ecstatic to finally have it in my collection! The sculpt is quite beautiful, and packed with detail. The head features a pebbly scalation on the face and lower jaw. The scales on top of the head are large and squared. They are similar to the scales seen on the Stegosaurus from The Lost World. The beak has a nice keratinous texture. All of the details are very crisp, especially for a smaller figure. The pebbled scales continue down the neck. The plates begin just at the base of the skull, and have some nice texturing. There is some nice wrinkling along the throat too, but the underside is less crisply textured than the rest of the figure. The scalation becomes significantly larger on the body. The scales are still bumpy, but are a bit more hexagonal in shape. There is some nice sagging skin outlining the belly as well. As with the throat, however, the underbelly is much lighter in detail than the rest of the figure. The plates along the back feature some of the best keratinous texturing of any of Mattels stegosaurs. The large shoulder spikes are especially well textured. There are even cracks and crevices sculpted into them which makes them appear well worn. The limbs are thick and muscular. They begin strongly scaled, but transition into more of a wrinkled skin texture at the knees and elbows. The feet are much more elephantine than I would have preferred. The tail is the only major issue I have with the sculpt. While all of the scalation detail is well done, the tail itself is just far too short, and much too skinny. This is especially jarring since the tail features six rather large thagomizers. Articulations are minimal, but get the job done. The legs can move forward and back. The front legs can sprawl out wide, and the rear legs can pivot outward slightly. All other movements are tied to the action feature. The action feature is also pretty minimalistic. Moving the head side to side causes the tail to swing back and forth. This would have been a much more rewarding action if the tail had been a bit more formidable. The paint scheme on this one is pretty nice. The biome for this Gigantspinosaurus is listed as desert, and the figures colors definitely have a sandy theme. I appreciate that the beak is painted, but its a bit of a letdown that the plates on the neck, tail, and the thagomizers are all left unpainted. Thankfully, the giant spines, as well as all of the back plates on the actual body, are painted beautifully. I would have loved to see a little paint on the rear legs as well. While its not perfect, this is easily my favorite of the smaller stegosaurid figures Mattel has done so far. The coloration is nice, and the detail is excellent. Combine all that with the fact that Gigantspinosaurus is my favorite stegosaurian, and I can easily give this one a big recommendation. Gigantspinosaurus is here, and it was well worth the wait!
