Due to a limited range of focus, and possibly an overly bright light, it's not entirely possible to make out things that aren't already quite clear and distinct (e.g. color dots in a printed picture) as opposed to things you might be more inclined to look at such as hair or the surface of a plant. Even my ancient Discovery Channel brand handheld microscope from the 90s that only has 60-100x zoom and is yellowed with age has enough range in the tiny focus wheel where I can see super clearly, so the fact that this brand new one can't is truly disappointing. For direct comparison, the first photo (bigger circle) I took looking at hair through this product. The second photo (smaller circle) I took looking at the same hair through my ancient toy microscope from the 90s. The other thing I wanted to mention is that this item arrived used. The box seal was broken, the device itself had a couple dark smudges on it, and the lens had little bits of black crud that took a lot of effort to clean out because the lens is so tiny and inset. Overall, I do not recommend this microscope, especially as a gift if you want your child to think highly of you. It's not completely unusable, but I would recommend you keep looking.

Its on the smaller side and works great with little hands (kids). Its pretty easy to use if you put the object on a flat surface and place the microscope directly over it but also flat on the surface. This allows the lens to focus properly. I think this is a good value at only $12.88 at the time of this review. It's a low cost activity that keeps my kids occupied for a good chunk of time, while also sparking their interest in nature and science. Since it is small its easy to take with when we go to the park or beach. It measures roughly 4.25 in high from the base to the eye hole 2 inches long 1.25 inches wide. The viewing cavity measures roughly: 1 inch long 1 inch wide .75 high

I was hoping to use this pocket microscope as a pocket magnifier with higher magnification than a standard magnifying glass but found it overall disappointing. The overall construction is plastic and feels cheap. The small lens and limited focus range made it challenging to effectively magnify objects, and I found myself struggling to maneuver the microscope for close examination of items on my tabletop.
