So you put water in the small outer reservoir as a barrier for ants. The problem comes in there. The little trench is very narrow making it almost impossible to get water in it and not where the food goes. If you manage to accomplish that, good luck keeping food out of the trench. We used this for an outside cat and I'd go out to replenish their food and some food would have been dropped into the trench making the water gross. But how do you empty the water if there's still food in the dish? I ended up throwing mine away.

What I liked: sturdy, bowls held a good amount of food for my feral cat What I would change: bowls were sloped in the bottom so liquids would come right out if poured from a height (i am paralyzed, so i often pour from my vehicle) also, many previous reviewers commented on the food falling into the moat or water evaporating--i would make the bowls have a curling lip at the top to shade the moat and protect from crumbs.

Works just like it should. I have seen ants around the area of the bowl, but they never get into the bowl. Cheap fix for the ant problem!
