When I received mine it was as hard as a rock if this happens you need to put it in a baggie, fill it with about 2 tsps of water (maybe more), and break the graphite into pieces while simultaneously massaging the water into it. If you have trouble breaking it apart you may want to let it sit in the wet baggie for a bit before you kneed it. Its a tedious process but you can reactivate the putty. So just a warning if you received it dry and were thinking about tossing it.

Firstly, I would like to thank all the people who answered my question. You all had very good advise about working with this Art Graf graphite putty. Everyone has posted excellent reviews but I would like to add something that I have found. When you work with the putty (WEAR GLOVES) tiny little bits end up everywhere. Keep your computer and anything else mildly important away from those tiny bits. Messy is more like hugely MESSY!!! Those bits end up everywhere, work table, skin, clothes. Wipe down your work area and your paper towels will be gray. I am happy with the product and can see lots of possibilities.

Its more like a putty then a dust to apply. The only way im able to apply it to paper lets say if I want to tone it is, i make a dispersion in water cause it is watrr soluable, I dip a rag in my "mix" and apply it to paper, once it dries you are able to erase it. Not the greatest stuff but not worst, depends what your looking to do. Its not a dry powder.

Wear gloves as its really messy, but its a very fun media. Dampen the surface and wipe the putty gently to get a beautiful, smooth graphite black. Its also possible to push the putty onto a texture and then touch it to the damp surface. I love graphite materials and the water soluble putty and sticks are nice additions.

Just got this today and created the base for a portrait exercise to test it. Using water will provide the best results but it works dry as well. I used an eraser to create light spots. This product is super fun to work with and creates a wide range of values.
