I ordered a half dozen laptop stands along with the Shelcone. My objective was to find the stand that made the best compromise between sturdiness, durability, ergonomics, portability, and manufacturing quality. The Shelcone was not only the best compromise, but it was the best in every one of this categories. This is even in comparison to one stand that costs nearly $100. This product is very well thought out, uses quality materials, has tight tolerances and smooth action, is very compact given its extended size, has clever features such as the neodymium magnets that snap it shut, and is simply an effective and high quality product, regardless of its price point. If the product had costed twice as much, I would still lavish the same praise. I even happened to be a lucky winner of a second Shelcone, but even if that had not happened, I would have written this same review. For those of you looking for a laptop stand that is also suitable as a textbook stand, this is it. I spent nearly a week looking at textbook stands from various venders, including one that costs 4 times what the Shelcone costs. I bought and tested a total of five stands. They all have their pros and cons. In the end, this is the best one I came across. The stand also can decrease in width so as to hold individual sheets of paper. The only thing that would make it better for holding a textbook is if the angle could be increased to, say, 50 degrees or so, rather than the max of 30 degrees (its second setting is around 25 degrees, if I recall correctly). Any angle greater than that, and some sort of retainer would be required to hold the pages back so that they don't swing down and forward, but such retainers are not particularly desired, as they do get in the way of changing pages. As a tutor of high school students, the Shelcone is sufficient enough, however, and its compact size and quick deployment make it easy to bring from one student's house to the next, and it is more than sturdy enough to handle the heaviest of textbooks without any flex or give. I already have multiple students who want one, along with their parents. Honestly, Tim and Natalie, if you are reading this, consider implementing a version that can raise its angle to around 45 or 50 degrees, as this would fill a gap in the market for portable book stands. Given what I see of the design, it might be a simple matter of moving the lower pivot points of the support arms further forward a bit. There are A LOT of school students out there that could use, and would probably be stoked to use, a clever product like this, and as a high school teacher and tutor, I'd gladly test it and advertize it for you!
