Build quality is great, work very well on my system

I recently bought a refurb Dell Precision 5820 to use as a home theater setup controller to replace an old laptop that was starting to go. It had an HDMI connection to my A/V receiver. When it arrived, I discovered that the 5820 had no HDMI connections, having only 4 Display Ports (DP 1.4) coming out of the Nvidia Quadro P4000. After some reading, it looked like I needed an active adapter to convert from DP to HDMI. I didn't see any reviews for this DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.0B HDR Adapter that mentioned a Dell tower/GPU combo, so I wanted to write a review for anyone else who decided to go this route. For active adapters, there were some cheaper options, but reading through the reviews for those products, the build quality was dubious at best (things from it not unlatching and breaking the graphics card, to melting, and most commonly, the cheap adapters just falling apart). I finally saw this adapter on one of the later pages in my ZeeBooth search, and seeing that there were a considerable amount of considerable tech-savvy reviews, decided to purchase (as an extra incentive there was a coupon available). Final price was 21 bucks. It arrived in new condition, and the build quality seemed robust. I seated and unseated the adapter from the DP a few times to make sure it would come off cleanly, and it did (always remember to push the button before removing from the graphics card - I was surprised to see the button on the bottom of the adapter, rather than the top). The HDMI cable connected with a nice fit, and then it was the moment of truth. I turned on my receiver and TV, fired up the computer, held my breath, and bingo, my high def TV was showing everything as it should, and the sound was great as well. Phew. So far, I have put the active adapter through the paces for a few days, and everything continues to look and sound great.

It works. It can put out a maximum of 240Hz @ 1080p on an HDMI 2.0 screen without issue. It lacks its own power, however, so if the input signal is weak from too long of a length or some other issue, it will top out at 144Hz at that resolution whereas a similar adapter from Club3D with its own power source (USB-C port for wall adapter) can push 240Hz off the same signal. Only problem is that other adapter is for HDMI 2.1, so it doesn't work with HDMI 2.0 screens like this one does. If the input signal isn't downgraded to DP 1.2 by a suitable adapter/converter, this adapter will not work. Usually most cables and adapters are backwards compatible and things should work, but I've had a few not work. Like, for instance, if you're using a DP 1.4 cable or coupler that is not DP 1.2 backwards compatible. When buying an adapter make sure you know exactly what input you want (DisplayPort 1.4 or 1.2) and what output you want (HDMI 2.0 or 2.1). They are not perfectly backwards compatible. Turns out what I really needed is a DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 active adapter. When I found one, it displayed 240Hz 1080p HDR under all conditions even without its own power.

I bought this for a custom build from 2013. MB: GA-990FXA-UD3 Processor: FX-8350 Mem: CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB PC3 12800 Video: SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7970 3GB OS on SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 512GB OS: Win 7 x64 Pro Video Drivers: AMD 15.20.1062.1004-150803a1-187669C (Catalyst 15.7.1) - I didn't like the additional clicks for advanced settings in Crimson Edition when it came out (and some settings I never found). So, it was a clean uninstall and rollback to the above. Before buying the adapter I was running a Samsung S24C570 monitor on the DVI output over a DVI - HDMI adapter, and a Samsung UN55JU6700FXZA on the HDMI output, both at 1080 60p. The UN55JU6700FXZA was set to UHD color and would run 2960 at 30p Full RGB (4:4:4) at 8, 10, or 12 bpc via HDMI output (as expected). In adding the adapter, the S24C570 stayed on the DVI output on an adapter to HDMI (I may use eventually use the card's HDMI output for a 3rd monitor), and the new adapter in this review took over output to the UN55JU6700FXZA. The chain is as follows: Radeon HD 7970 DisplayPort output - Club 3d CAC-1070 - Yason Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable (10'/18gbps) - UN55JU6700FXZA. Output/Video Testing: I first disabled output to the S24C570, just in case that could cause any issues, though it shouldn't. I proceeded to test the output to the UN55JU6700FXZA at 3840x2160 60p. The image looks great. Catalyst did disable Pixel Format selection (it's completely gone from the menu), and it locked bpc at 8. Crimson may allow it, but I really don't want to install it. I don't think many would notice too much difference in increased bpc at full RGB. After ensuring functionality for the adapter, I sent output to the S24C570 as well. They run great with the S24C570 on 1080 @ 60p and the UN55JU6700FXZA on 3840x2160 60p. Audio Offset: I'm using the MB SPDIF optical output to a Yamaha receiver. I noticed NO offset to audio when playing video files, YouTube videos, recorded TV via Windows Media Center, or Blu-ray via Cyberlink PowerDVD 15. Beware: Watch your cables. I ordered a two-pack of the Yason HDMI 2.0 cables, and one couldn't handle 2160 @ 60p; 30p was fine, and 1080 30p/60p were fine, but only one of the cables handled 2160 @ 60p. I also tested an old MonoPrice RedMere cable that was rated for 24p and it wouldn't handle 60p (of course it shouldn't, but why not see?). I tested an older regular (not RedMere) cable rated for 24p as well, which handled 2160 @ 30p and would connect on 2160 @ 60p, though it had screen tear when sending high speed motion scenes. Summary: 4K @ 60p is very demanding, it may take some playing with settings and other hardware to ensure functionality. The adapter works great for me now that the cable can handle the necessary bandwidth. (And, as one cable rated to handle it didn't work, double check at least before blaming the adapter.) The adapter itself seems solidly built, and has a reasonably flexible cable section that could do a 90 degree angle without feeling stressed. The HDMI end is glossy and came covered in film (which was not removed when the photo was taken). Finally 2160 @ 60p out of my AMD card!!
