Filter Max II Foam Sponge Prefilter for Aquariums up to 20 Gallons...

Have this in my shrimp tank, does great.

This was the best option for my Fluval 407. But, I can tell the plastic is very thin & possibly brittle. As long as buyer knows this up front, and is careful with it, should be no problem.

Works as advertised. Thanks to some previous reviews, I was prepared with plumbers tape to ensure a good leak free connection. The adapter tubes that came with it were either to big or too small for my HOB filter (top fin brand) and it is because of this that I gave 4 stars. After wrapping the intake tube of the filter a couple of times with the plumbers tape, I got one of the adapters to fit nice and snug. I read previous reviews stating that the adapter tubes were cracking. No problems with cracking as of now, tubing material seems fine and not flimsy. I will update if it cracks. Other than that great product that is doing exactly what it is intended to do. At the time of the picture there were no shrimp on the sponge but shortly after installation, a couple of my shrimp were already picking food off of the sponge. Prior to this product I was using cheap filter media bags tied around the intake to prevent my shrimplets from being sucked into the filter. Now they are better protected from being sucked into the filter and have a nice grazing surface to boot. Also doesnt seem to affect the flow of the filter at all which is nice. My only regret is that I should have bought the smallest one as the up to 40 gallon one I purchased looks a little bulky in my tank but that is my own fault. Great product. Thank you.

I have a Fluval 207 canister filter on a 20 gallon long tank. This tank houses some tricky fish like Black Kuhli loaches that would easily be sucked up its intake. Heck, they are so mischievous and curious they would probably seek out the intake because its a crevice. I previously divided a small sliver of my tank (with a Dexters divider) to keep all my small fish away from the 207s intake. This was cosmetically an ugly solution. The Filter-Max III Pre-filter solves this problem completely! It installs easily and comes with 3 adapters to fit various intake sizes of the filter you might have. My tank is only 12 high so it was easier for me to completely remove Fluvals intake tube and plug the middle size adapter of the Filter Max right into the Fluval coupling. This also saves having to alter Fluvals intake tube. The sponge is nice and course, I have seen no impact to performance of the filter. That said, the sponge will have to be kept clean with regular maintenance. The filter makers should OEM or sell these as an option.

I have a 55 gallon aquarium with an aquaclear 110 HOB filter. The aquaclear 110 was setup with the standard two extension tubes for the inlet, and no additional prefilter. The fish I had in the tank were strong swimmers and this never caused a problem. However, purchasing small angelfish, who were a bit slower than my other fish, created a problem. I immediately ordered this filter-max III prefilter to help resolve the problem. This product shipped quickly and arrived a day earlier than expected with a prime membership. With the two extension tubes on the aquaclear 110 in a standard 55 gallon tank, I had to use the 90 degree connection, otherwise it would not have fit. No modification is needed to the aquaclear extension tube or to the prefilter. There is an adapter that slides over the bottom of the extension tube, which is then connected to the 90 degree angle, and is then connected to the prefilter. The prefilter has a cap on the other end of the sponge. The prefilter did exactly what I needed to protect my angelfish. I have two cons that aren't that big of a deal. The first is that this prefilter is a bit large, so for those very into the visual aesthetics of their aquarium, you will need to hid it. The second is that it filters well, but because of that, you can now see some of the junk from the tank sitting on the sponge. Overall this is a great product and I give it 5 stars.
