Just what I needed to connect HDMI computer to an older monitor.

Get a USB powered one.

After using it with a old projector about five times it stopped working.The case popped open while the hdmi cord was plugged in. I was able to close it back up and use it a couple more times. It seem the hdmi cord added weight to it that ut could not handle, I opened it back up to trouble shot it and saw that the contacts for the hdmi port hardly had any solder, so it came lose at the soldering points and came lose if the board. I tried to ad solder to the point but did not work, seems to have had to much stress to the board. The good thing I was able to buy an updated projector. The part itself is good hopefully this was just an over-site.

Wow, this thing is awesome! If you're like me, you have a few LCD monitors laying around the shop with older VGA inputs. (I just can't seem to throw anything out that still works, and thankfully have an understanding wife.) This very-low cost device allows you to hook up modern devices using an HDMI output directly to those old monitors and put them back into play again. As I'm a nasty tester, I decided to put this through the wringer. I took a DisplayPort output signal from a modern computer sitting on my bench, passed it through a DVi-to-HDMI conversion dongle, connected that to a 25' HDMI to HDMI cable, then connected THAT to this converter, which was then attached to the monitor itself. And would you believe it provided crystal clear output, even at 1920x1080??? That was slightly higher than the native resolution of the panel I used (1440x900), so it looked more crisp when I lowered it of course, but for periodic use, especially for bench work, it was perfect! I will likely be getting a few more of these to put these older monitors back into play. There was one caveat to note -- not enough to dock it by a star, but enough that it should be noted here. The length of this converter is about 2 inches, and it has a VGA male connector on it. Once you plug it in and add the HDMI cable, you need almost 2.5-2.75 inches of clearance below the VGA port on the monitor. The first monitor I grabbed off the shelf only offered 1.75" of clearance between the VGA port and the stand, so I couldn't plug this unit into that monitor at all. If you have limited space, just note that you might ALSO need to find a short VGA extension cable, which could add another $2 to your project, but it's still a darned site better than tossing the old monitors and buying newer HMDI units.
