This is cheap and cheerful, which you expect since its basically a light shade to help indirect light entering directly into your lens. Because it is threaded, I have to remove my F&F magnetic filters and UV protecter. The hood will twist into the threads on my lens. Also, there is no compatible threads on the outer edge inside the hood, so I cant reattach my filters and cap once the hood is on. I have to have a camera bag or something to safely stow my lens filters while Im using the hood. Because of the above, I dont use it as much as I would like. It just needs to be threaded on both sides so I can use my filters and cap with the hood on. Then it would be excellent. As it is, I can only give it 3 stars.

Here we have a generic tulip-shaped lens hood made out of black plastic. The plastic is plenty thick, but isn't particularly matte. The screw thread works fine. There is a secondary ring (with no usage instructions) that presumably is used to lock a rotational position when the tulip is positioned correctly to not vignette, but that mechanism is fiddly at best. They included a microfiber cleaning cloth. Perhaps that's useful, but it has nothing to do with the hood, and I've got a stack of them from similar random inclusions with other camera accessories. I'd rather have had the hood at a slightly lower price. In sum, this is a perfectly usable 52mm tulip hood, but I was expecting a little better out of K&F. It's still a fairly good value, so 4/5 stars.

I recently added a K&F Concept 49mm variable neutral density filter to my collection, and it came with an inconvenience common among VND filters. Although the filter size is 49mm to fit the required size of the lens its meant for, the front threads of the VND filter are larger. This negates the option of using the lens OEM lens shade. The rear threads of the VND filter are 49mm, while the front threads are 52mm. I always use a lens shade, so using the VND filter requires an optional 52mm threaded lens shade. Enter the K&F Concept 52mm Tulip Lens Hood, appropriate for the lens it will be accommodating, since it is a 28mm wide angle lens; the tulip shape allows for orientations that minimize vignetting. Although the lens hood is made entirely of plastic, keeping its weight down, its a thick, hard, durable plastic far less likely to bend or dent than a metal or aluminum one. As such, it provides extra protection for the front element of an attached lens. The Tulip Lens Hood also has an interesting and useful feature Ive not come across in a lens shade before: a locking ring. K&F Concept has provided the lens shade with extra thread depth to accommodate different accessories, for example, a filter or a lens. That being the case, once the lens hood is threaded onto an accessory of interest, for example a VND filter, the locking ring can be tightened against it, preventing the filter from coming unfastened during the course of adjusting it. Its actually a clever and welcome accommodation. Given the $7.50 cost of the K&F Concept Tulip Lens Hood, even comparatively, its a very good value in my opinion. Also, K&F is a trusted manufacturer, I own a number of their filters and accessories, so I know from experience that they stand behind their products.

I got this for several of the 52mm lenses I have. It threads on smoothly with no wobble and is made of nice, thick plastic. One of these lenses is a 18-55mm zoom used on a Nikon DSLR with an APS-C format sensor. The manufacturers description says not to use this hood on any lens with a wider field of view than 25mm to avoid vignetting (darkening of the edges of the photo). The crop factor for Nikon APS-C sensors is 1.5x, so at 18mm this lens has a field of view comparable to 27mm on a full frame digital camera or a standard 35mm film camera which is usually used as the reference when describing the field of view of lenses attached to cameras which evolved from 35mm film cameras. Look it up to get a better idea of what Im talking about if you dont already know. Im not that keen on it myself. Anyway, 27mm is uncomfortably close to 25mm so I ran some test shots of an evenly lit yellowish blank wall with the Nikon to check for any vignetting. The camera viewfinder is not 100% accurate so I had to go with the actual pictures. I found no noticeable vignetting at 18mm as long as the hood was oriented with the two largest petals pretty close to 12 and 6 oclock. I found that to achieve the no-vignette at this position, the hood needed to be screwed in all the way meaning that the lock ring had to be all the way snugged up to the body of the hood. A partial rotation of the ring to secure the hood with the petals at the correct position was okay, but even a few full backwards rotations of the lock ring which prevented the hood being screwed down as far as possible started giving me some vignetting. Even locked down to the right position to start off theres a slight rotation of the front of the lens to achieve proper focusing (unless you have one of those expensive lenses that have internal focusing), but the movement is fairly minor and didnt give me any trouble. You probably will have trouble, though, if you screw the hood onto a filter and then try to shoot at 18mm! If using a zoom lens you could cancel any vignette by just selecting a slightly longer focal length at which to shoot. Apologies for going on, but the take-away is that you shouldnt have vignette issues using this hood at 18mm on a APS-C format camera. Canon has a 1.6x crop factor which puts you even farther from the 25mm danger zone. If you have a full frame format digital or a 35mm film camera, you would have major issues at 18mm. So, then dont use any focal length under the 25mm mentioned. Of course, if you are using a zoom lens, you can use it fine at focal lengths greater than 25mm. I dont need to penalize this hood by taking away stars as it seems to be well made and does its job very inexpensively.
