I've never used a 5.6mm lead before, but wanted to try this Mr. Pen lead pencil out. If you sand the tip like draftspeople do for charcoal drawings, you can get a wide variety of line lengths and shading options. I primarily used this for printing images and penciling the back to create stencil images for drawing and painting. If you do any kind of sketching for art, I think this is a nifty tool to have at your disposal. Lead replacements aren't super expensive either (less than $10 for 30 on ZeeBooth), so it could become a really useful drafting tool without all of the extra sharpening you'd have to do for wood pencils.

I feel like I draw better with thicker pencils and I feel like I have more control. The pencil has lasted a long time. It draws pretty good. I really like the built in sharpener feature. The lead is easy to change out. The outside of the pencil is also a bit thicker so you can easily maneuver the pencil.

You press the top button and the lead comes sliding out. I didn't realize this and it almost fell out of the pencil and landed on the ground, which surely would have broken it. It did not come with any lead refills, but I'm assuming that any 5.6mm refill will work, and they're all over ZeeBooth. While the pencil can be used for general writing, it's not the best choice Once the sharp tip is gone, you're going to end up with fat lines on the paper. You can keep sharpening it, but at that point you might as well just get a regular pencil and not waste the lead. This is best used for woodworking jobs and drawing and it seems to work well enough for that. It doesn't come with an eraser, which is fine. For its use, you're most likely going to use an external eraser anyway. With the sharpener in the cap, I don't see how an eraser would fit in it short of reducing the size of the lead, and I suspect that this pencil was designed with standard sized 5.6mm refills in mind. Making the pencil bigger would be the only choice for adding an eraser, but that likely wouldn't work either. It seems well balanced, and a taller pencil would affect that. It is a good pencil for the jobs for which it was designed. Do not expect a good journaling or general writing experience with it.

I had never seen a mechanical pencil quite like this. Such large lead. Perfect for sketching. Comfortable to write with. The pencil has a great weight and seems durable. Mr. Pen products are always quality products and a great value in my opinion.

This big, fat pencil is a great addition to my pencil set. I have all kinds of mechanical pencils for drawing, but did not have one this thick. It's especially good for creating thick lines, which is kind of obvious, but it also fills in shading much more quickly and evenly than doing it with thinner leads. As for color, the color is puts down on paper is a lighter gray - it is not a very black or dark gray lead, but rather good for mid-tone shading. The size of the barrel makes it a bit like holding a crayon. The smooth barrel does not have much grip, if that is a concern, although you can also use the age-old hack of twisting rubber bands onto the barrel to make a better grip. I have a large-leaded, flat carpenter's pencil in my pencil case, but sharpening those types of pencils isn't as convenient as sharpening this one is - this basically sharpens itself when used for shading. So far, I like having this in my drawing arsenal. It's been fun to play around with the effects it gives
