Not for a 5-year-old

Cute panda. Box says for ages five and older, but it would be very difficult for a child that young. Not a project to learn on. Plastic needle had a hard time pushing through the felt slits and quickly bent, so we switched to a real needle. My 12-year-old granddaughter loves pandas, has some experience sewing felt creatures, and is enjoying this project. However, she wanted me to share that she does not recommend it for someone much younger than herself.

Very cute and easy to make

I have to confess that I got this kit for myself. The picture of the panda on the box was so cute that I couldnt resist. The kit contained everything needed to sew it together. It was quick and easy for me to put together but I also think that with some help from an adult who knows the basics of sewing by hand, this would not be a difficult project for even a preschool child. The materials are very good quality and the finished panda product is absolutely adorable.

Directions could be better. Had to punch out holes with a pin , plastic needle wouldnt go through the pieces otherwise!

adorable and good way to teach sewing

This is so adorable, I think it is even cuter in person when completed. It is a good way for kids to learn some basic sewing. There are 4 stitches used. It has a plastic needle that works well and is safe for kids. The directions were well done with pictures that show what to do. The felt pieces all show exactly where to put each stitch so they will be even. And it shows you where exactly to put in the stuffing (filling). If a beginner is doing this project they might need help understanding how the stitches work. I tried it with a 6, 8, and 10 year old who are at various levels of sewing experience. The beginner needed a lot of help and encouragement but she was able to make her part look nice. The experienced girls were able to do it with minimal help once I got them started. I enjoyed helping and watching them as they created this adorable panda. We named her "Harmony" because we all had a different part and we worked together. The description says, "pillow" but it's a stuffed animal, not really big enough for a pillow-- except maybe for a doll. I think that was just a translation error. It's a small, felt, stuffed animal with wiggly eyes that you have to assemble (sew and stuff) yourself.

Arts and Crafts

We got a couple of these for our daughters to have something to do besides play on phones during a long road trip. This beginners sewing kit allowed them to see what stitching is like. It has a plastic needle so its not dangerous and the thread is pretty thick. Its a one time use item but it did occupy them for around 45 minutes or so, taught them a little teamwork, and made for some interesting conversation about how clothes and other items are made from being stitching together. It would also make a nice stocking stuffer or perhaps something for a school project for kids around the 7 to 12 year old range.
