This is a great game that encourages logic and thinking ahead. Negative: In less than bright light, some of the colors are hard to tell which are which. Because seeing the colors is absolutely essential to gameplay, this kinda sucks. If playing outside at night or in a dim room, we often need to use a flashlight to tell blue from green and white from yellow cards.

We've tried other cooperative games that are fine. This one however, is our favorite. It's simply to learn, there's definitely a bit of luck, however, there's also a lot of strategy. If you play repeatedly with the same people you develop your own specific strategies. We always play with all 6 "fireworks" and we frequently play the 2-player version and find it equally satisfying.

This compact size and minimal pieces make this a fun family game perfect for traveling. We took it on our last trip and we all enjoyed it...from our children: 8 and teenager.... to us adults. The rules were easy to follow but also challenging to make the game interesting. Also includes options for upping the difficulty. But we are still working on the regular rules. We found the time estimate of 30 min to be accurate. We also enjoyed that the game required us to work together instead of playing against each other.

Yes! One of my favorite games is finally back in my possession after moving multiple times and falling out of playing games, I can't wait to get back into sharing this game with others! It's easy to learn, great for two player can be expanded to six player. I believe.. it's friendly, cooperative, quick, and definitely good for exercising the brain, certainly not a game for any slouches out there, it takes teamwork and understanding and a passion and energy to actually set off all the fireworks, which, I must admit, after many many many years of playing I have never completely got 100%, it's not an easy game but it's certainly fun!

Hanabi is a wonderfully unique co-operative game that belongs in every game collection. Each player starts with a hand of cards, but you hold the cards facing away from you. So you can see everyone's cards, but not your own. The turn mechanics are dead simple - give a clue (if clues tokens are still available), play a card (the right card adds to your score, but play 3 cards that don't fit and the game is over), or discard a card (to resupply the clue token pool). The goal of the game is to achieve the highest score possible by playing cards of the 5 different colors in sequentially ascending numerical rank. The final twist comes from the clue giving restrictions - a clue can only be given about the color or rank of a card, and information has to consider a player's full hand. For example, let's say your friend has Red1, Red5, Yellow5, Blue1, Blue2. You can't just point to the Red5 and say "this is red" or "this is a five"; you would instead have to point out both red cards or both fives. Hanabi is a blast to play; very well deserving its 2013 Game of the Year award (Spiel des Jahres). Pros: + As portable as it gets + Teachable in under 5 minutes + Plays quickly, making it a great filler + But, people always want to play another game to beat their last score + The rare co-op game that doesn't suffer from alpha gamers taking over + Engenders lots of eye contact and player interaction despite the limited amount you can say + The deduction element results in immense satisfaction when you achieve a high score + Rewards attentiveness and playing the odds (especially with more players) Cons: - Theme is practically nonexistent - Memory is an important aspect which might be a turn-off for some - Cards and chits are not the most durable - Aiming for the highest score will seem like a loose definition of winning (good luck getting a perfect score!) - Not giving away extra information accidentally via body cues can be a challenge
