This great-looking, well-built firetruck toy is powered by three AA bateries (not included) that are fitted snugly in the compartment on the underside of the truck, and the cover to the battery chamber requires a small Phillips head screwdriver to access. Once your batteries are in place, lock in the cover on by screwing down the supplied mini-screw, and let the fun begin! The power switch is also located on the underside of the truck, and this switch provides two different modes of operation for the truck and it also turns the power off. The first operational option powers up the flasing bright light display while the truck remains stationary. The many different multi-colorful LED lights will light up the nearby surrounding space that the firetruck has been positioned, and the wheels of the truck do not move. This option is ideal if you have the truck positioned on a shelf or display cabinet, forexample, because you wouldn't want the truck to ride itself off the shelf or into the sides of the cabinet, but you can still enjoy the light show that it produces. The second mode of operation powers up the flashing lights and the wheels of the truck, and it also kicks in the sound of a modern-day firetruck siren and repeating beeps to let nearby motorists know that a speeding firetruck in approaching. The siren is loud, and there is no way to turn down the sound when the truck is in motion, but it's not too overbearing. If you wish to have the light show and the siren noises turned on while keeping the truck in a staionary position, you're in luck! The manufacturer provides a round, translucent plastic riser cap that fits over second set of smaller wheels located between the larger set of six wheels located on both sides of the truck. It the smaller set of wheels, which are not visible when the truck is resting or moving in its normal, upright position, that propel the truck in motion. The larger, visible wheels of the truck rotate around and around when the truck is moving, but these wheels aren't connected to any part of the motor. When the riser cap is in position, the larger wheels don't move, and the truck remains completely still. When the riser cap covering the smaller moving wheels is removed and the switch is set to the second operational mode, the truck will move along the floor in the direction it is facing. When it comes in contact with an object, like the leg of a chair or a wall, it will automatically reposition itself and continue moving along the floor surface in another direction. I must say this toy is very amusing to watch, with or without it in full motion! What I like most about this toy are the many sensory features built into the truck's construction. I ordered this for my 3 year olds birthday and OMG he lovesssss this truck. It makes all of the sounds that a fire truck would and lights up so vibrantly. Theres little firefighters on the inside that turns around while its on and I just think thats the coolest thing ever.
