The plastic on these is not quite up to the Pica standard, but it's much better than some of the others I've reviewed, particularly the sheath. The pencil fits very snug. Ultimately the value in these kinds of pencils is the sheath once you have the muscle memory to return the pencil. There are copies out there without sheaths, and they are about as worthless as a standard construction pencil - you can never find where you put it down. These are a level up from the typical Pica copies for sure, but not quite to the level of the Pica. However, I do not care for the sharpener-in-the-cap system. Few of the sharpeners in this style is convenient, but this one is more inconvenient than other approaches.

Love them! Nicely made, great pocket clips on both the pencil and the cap, and they write smoothly. I love the long, thin shaft for getting inside smaller holes for marking.

I am really into woodworking, so I am always using pencils for marketing. Honestly I prefer my Pico pencils, what I use almost all the time, but thought I'd try these out. They are pretty nice, not as nice as the Pico, but more than nice enough for the job. They do work well, pumping out the lead and for marking. Of course you get two in this one, a nice to have. they also give you extra leads, always good to have more on hand. Work as they should. Things I am not a fan of... while the pencils have sharpeners, you have to pull out the end and unscrew the cap to be able to use them. Not terrible, but some extra steps each time you want to sharpen. Just not the best design. My Pico pencils have the sharpener in the end of the cap, ready to use, no need to take anything apart. The other thing, at the current 19 for this set, it's high. There are actually the exact same pencils, even the same color on here for a better price. I leave it up to you. Probably would not be my first choice.

I have 3 different brands of this type of carpenter mechanical pencil, and this is one of the best. I really like it overall, it works great, but I took off 1 star for one annoyance. My other two brands work very similarly, but are very loose and fall out of their "sheath" too often. This one sticks and clips on to the sheath much better and stays put better, however that stay-putted-ness has a downside, as I often end up pulling off the end cap that contains the sharpener and advances the graphite more often than successfully pulling the pencil out in one piece. A design flaw, but it still performs amazingly and is my favorite kind of pencil in the world for what I do. I have a feeling this might (?) loosen up a tad with use and maybe will break in and eliminate the problem of pulling the end off.

This is my review of Vanquish 2 Pack Carpenter Pencil with Sharpener Mechanical Pencils Set with 14 Refills. I used these pencils for my woodworking projects. I do, however, feel they are more suited to carpentry than fine woodworking. The tip sharpens fine with the included sharpener under the cap. The black lead is soft as a number 2 pencil causing the need to sharpen often. For carpentry such as rough framing you do not need as sharp a pencil. These do function much better than those carpenters pencils you find at the hardware store and are easier to keep sharp. I was planning on using the yellow and red lead on metal working projects. I found red does a decent job marking on aluminum, not as pronounced as I would like but visible. Steel on the other hand did not show the markings well at all. I tried both red and yellow but found neither to mark clearly or easily visible. The yellow and red colors are also very soft, much like grease pencils causing the tip to wear fast. I believe these pencils have a place in my shop, just not when fine markings are required. I will use them for my next construction project. The colored lead will be useful on darker woods such as Ebony and Walnut that I have a difficult time seeing black pencil marks on. Since the black lead was soft with the yellow and red even softer and the lack of satisfaction when used on metal, I feel the product deserves at most 3 stars.
