Simple. The color pen doesn't matter, it depends on the color on the mat, under that first layer of material. You can see in the picture, that there's different colors that show through when you wet it.

This is an ok water doodle mat, it's cheap quality,thin and coming apart at one of the edges from the seam, I like that it's big,comes with 4 water doodle pens and alot if different templates that accommodates 4 children well,the doodle pens are small,so they only hold a little amount of water,they have felt tips that water comes out of that allows for drawing, when the drawing canvas gets wet, the under layer of the top of it displays colors, the water drawings disappear fairly quickly and can draw again,the problem with the number stencils are that when punched out,it punches out completely with no full definition of the number, if that makes any sense, other than the minor flaws mentioned, this is a cute, colorful doodle mat with fun animal prints.

I love that there's no mess to clean up after a creative does of painting. I love that the water is high contrast color. 1 star= Dissappointed. I don't recommend it at all, poor quality, or it does not reflect the advertising. 2 stars = Has some reedeeming quality. 3 stars = It's passable. Might not have bothered. 4 stars = Mostly Satisified. 5 stars = Entirely Satisfied. Recommend.

This is great to allow the kids play uninhibited because it is water. Just let dry and they can draw again, no mess just play. Can take a few minutes to dry but the kids love to use it as soon as it is dry again.
