There are plenty of discussions and reviews online of the pros and cons of a plasma lighter vs a standard fuel-based lighter, and if that's something that you're curious about, its probably better to read up on them. The biggest pro is, really, that they're windproof... although how much that matters is debatable, I suppose. For me, really, its just cool to use -- its like a lighter that some sci-fi captain would use to kick back and light a stogie in a movie. I mean, arcs of plasma. That's just cool.... I mean hot. It is starting a fire, after all. So this particular unit? I haven't run it dead, so I can't say what the battery life is. The sort of tens-of-kilivolt plasma units don't use much current, so I would expect it lasts a long time as a lighter. The lighter unit itself has a semi-sealed rubber case that, I presume, is why they call it "waterproof". But lets be honest, here -- it takes more than a little metal clasp and some rubber to make something waterproof. Its best to assume its water resistant. Its not like they're giving it an IPX rating. Under the cap is the USB port and the button to trigger the plasma arcs. Like any fob-shaped lighter, you're not going to have a lot of luck with lighting enclosed candles or something, especially given the heat is very isolated, so you can't sort of hold the candle upside down and hope it lights. But when the tip can reach the thing being lit, it lights right up. And, as I said, wind doesn't do much (or anything) with these kind of lighters. The flashlight is a bit of a throwaway function. I mean, maybe its handy if you don't have any of the multitude of other things with flashlights with you, but your phone has a lot more light than this does. And the "survival whistle" is just a cheap plastic whistle on a lanyard that is of almost no use and will probably get tossed anyway. Like a lot of these sort of things, adding more garbage doesn't make it more useful, it just makes it more expensive. It'd be better without them. The lighter is a five-star lighter, but the added wasteful crap makes it a four-star package.
