POWERTEC 71384 T-Wrench | 5/16 18 Threaded Insert Installation Tool w/T-Shape Handle...

This was the first project that I have done using threaded inserts, and I learned a lot as I went. Immediate problems I faced were (1) the inserts would not easily release from the t-handle, so they were drawing out instead of staying put and (2) the inserts would not stay aligned with the hole as they went in. I believe that variations in the wood grain and density was the main culprit for these issues. My solutions - first, I used a washer on the t-handle between the handle and the insert. This made removing the handle from the insert much easier as the nut would not "lock" onto the handle threads. Secondly, because the hole that I was using went completely through the wood (3/8" hole for the bolt & 9/16" for the insert) I was able to insert the bolt through the hole and thread the insert halfway onto the bold and the t-handle on the other ends. The bolt would hold the insert in perfect alignment with the hole. Once the insert was seated, I would then loosen the bolt and remove the t-handle leaving the insert in position. If you have a project that requires parts to be installed and removed regularly, this system is definitely worth your attention. Much easier and faster than pulling screws and less destructive in the long term.

I recently purchased a package of the 3/8-16 inserts and the 71380 t wrench which is marked "for 3/8-16 inserts". I have no problem with the inserts - they work just fine. The T wrench however is way too small to fit the 3/8-16 inserts. I haven't checked it with a thread checker to see what size it actually is. I reported the problem to ZeeBooth and they sent me another. It is the same size as the first. Not sure if Powertec received a bad (mislabeled) batch of these or what. I have a call in to them to see what they say. I would love to have the proper T wrench to install the inserts. I have been using a 3/8 bolt to do the job. I am not in the habit of sharing negative reviews but wanted to share this as others out there may want to know before they buy one.
