I had one of these in years past and wanted another, as it had been a great product for garden and border weed control. I have seen this described by a number of terms including stirrup hoe, action hoe, and hula hoe. Regardless, this hoe works! This item does not include the handle, so you will need to provide your own - I recommend a solid wood handle, as the attachment section takes a beating, and tubular fiberglass or metal handles tend to fail from repeated impact loading at the bolt attachment point. The hoe head attaches with two 7.5 mm hex head bolts and hex acorn head lock nuts (provided). The length of the bolts determines the maximum diameter of the handle at the attach point, which is 1.25 inches. (Of course a larger handle could be used if you replace the provided bolts with your own longer bolts.) Everything else is as described.

At less than half the price of a new Hula Hoe, this replacement head is a bargain and gives my perfectly good wooden handle an upgrade to make it work like new again. The design and construction are identical to the original that has, over the years, been worn quite thin in the landscaping rocks for which this design hoe is perfectly suited. This replacement looks to be sturdy and has just the right amount of back-and-forth play where the stirrup attaches to the handle bracket to make the angle self-adjusting between push and pull working directions. Both the leading and trailing edges are sharpened, so it will cut the heads off of weeds just below the surface with minimal disturbance of the top layer of stones. Logically, this works the best in smaller pebbles, so in my screened landscape, it is truly excellent. It does, of course, also work in garden soil, especially if it is a little bit drier and a sandier soil, simplifying the chore of knocking down the weeds between the garden rows, flowers, and under shrubs. Time will tell if the quality of the black steel blade is as good, and lasts as long as the original, but it is promising, as it tests quite hard when the edge of a file is run against it, showing that it is tougher than just plain soft steel.
