I like cooking with fresh herbs when I cook, but keeping an actual garden is more outdoor time than I want to deal with in the summer, so my in-house potted herb garden is my solution. The catch is, I'm terrible about remembering to water my plants until they're in their final death throes, so when I discovered the convenience of self-watering pots, I was immediately into the idea. I have a larger set, but was looking for a couple more pots to supplement the selection of herbs I'm growing. That's when "Self Watering Planter,Indoor Plants Pots for 4 Inch,2 Pack Clear White Plastic Flower Pot with Wick Rope,Home Modern Cylindrical Ribbed Decorative Pot for African Violets, Orchid,Aloe" came along and asked me to order them. These pots are exactly what I expected them to be after seeing the product images and description, though they seem a bit "cheaper" than I thought they'd be. The plastic/acrylic does not feel very durable. I'd say these would deteriorate prematurely if not kept indoors - sun damage would probably make these pots become brittle in no time. But otherwise, these are pretty much just what I thought they'd be and just what I wanted. These pots are relatively small. I have one of these with a baby cilantro plant in it right now. Cilantro is an herb I use regularly, but sparingly, so the size of these pots will work out great. I don't have anything in the second one...yet. But give me a week or two and something will be growing in it. Rosemary, probably. It's great and I use it a lot for beef dishes, but just as with the cilantro, it has a powerful enough flavor that "less is more" most of the time, so I won't need tons or rosemary - just rosemary that's alive and healthy... and available in my kitchen. The only other criticism I have is that because the outer pot (where the excess water is held) is clear, if you overwater the plants from the top, the water will become murky, muddied, and may not look so great, depending on your feelings about visible "dirty water." It doesn't bother me too much and I'd rather be able to see the water level than to not, but it is the kind of thing I can see some people having an issue with.

I have a set of predatory plants that are very exacting in their needs in order to thrive and these self-watering pots are the perfect solution as they have a nesting arrangement that allows for total control over the water levels. The top parts that house the plants are raised about 1/3 of the way inside the clear plastic water reservoir so it's easy to see how much water they do/don't have at any time. The cotton rope wicks are nice and thick and allow for easy water transfer and the top portion fits flush with the top so that water doesn't escape around the edges. At 4 inches, they are the perfect size to house small plants that are thirsty but can't have wet feet all the time in order to thrive.

These self-watering pots are small; only 3-inches. They are plastic and come two to a pack and work well. I do like the clear reservoir making it very easy to view the water level. These come with the wicks needed. They are long wicks, which I ended up cutting on in half and using it for both pots. If you're looking for small self-watering plastic pots, these work well.

These are plastic and cheap feeling, and smaller than I expected. They are shallow and don't fit the depth of a transplanted 4" pot of thyme (had to break root ball in half to fit.) I do like the self watering aspect and the amount of water it holds.

I love African violets. They are frequently reproducing themselves and I've experimented with a number of ways to divide them and help them get acclimated to new soil and larger space. I found self-watering planters a couple of years ago and buy them often. The first ones I bought were rather expensive ceramic. I was very happy with them except I didn't want to spend that amount of money - usually around $30.00 per pot. Eventually I found plastic pots and was very happy with them. They keep the soil moist from the bottom and I can easily tell by looking at the clear base when they need more water. I was happy to find these 4" pots. They are excellent for propagating from leaves and several of them can go under one grow light. Of course, these pots are good for most plants but they especially good for those that appreciate watering from the bottom.
